if you, like me, are a sucker for gorgeous graphic designs for in and around your home…you’ll lurve Luzelle van der Westhuizen’s work. She creates striking screenprints to brighten up any space (i’ve got my eye on her Manor Garden print in green for our new kitchen) and her tea towels make my heart sing.
I caught up with Luzelle, is from Cape Town but currently lives in London, to find out a little more what makes her tick
What do you miss about SA? I miss my family the most and the obvious things like the mountain, sunshine and the ocean. Also, the vibes of Long Street and Kloof Street, the noon gun, the Kaapse Klopse, the Labia cinema and Royale burgers.
What do you love about living in London town? I love all the incredible art and design museums, Borough Market, a great public transport system and strolling along the Thames and the Southbank. London has such a rich, diverse culture and a great curry on Brick Lane.
Your current best seller in your Etsy shop? My best seller is my “Moka Express” design, which is a hand drawn image of the classic Italian espresso maker in 3 different views in a repeat pattern. The design is screen printed by hand by myself on paper and is also available on 100% cotton tea towels. This coffee maker is such a classic, loved item (in my home especially) and I think that people have a connection with it. Another popular item is the “Robots in love” silkscreen print, which is A3 size and printed in red, green, neon pink and grey.
What other designers do you admire and why? The simple, Scandinavian designs of Marimekko and Charles and Ray Eames’s modernist world. I’m a big fan of Mid Century modern design. The whimsical work of British illustrator Julia Pott always makes me smile and i love Nina of Nina Invorm’s colourful ceramics. Also, Rob Ryan’s paper cut-out screen prints are amazingly intricate (check out his blog here).
Thanks for taking time to chat to iwantthat Luzelle!
