I wish I could remember who told me about Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, so that I could send them a thank you card. Oh yes, a card – not just an email. That’s how special Grootbos is.
We arrived at Forest Lodge, one of two lodges at Grootbos, in the late afternoon – a great pity, seeing as we had missed the horse riding and 4×4 reserve safari ride for the afternoon. It is a beautiful drive to get there – just outside Stanford (although they say Greater Hermanus) and through some truly stunning scenery. Nothing will prepare you for the amazing views as you walk into Grootbos, though. It’s breathtaking.
Check-in involves a glass of bubbly on the verandah and browsing the many activities on offer – from a fynbos walk to the aforementioned horse riding, ancient caves tour or a social responsibility tour, all included in the rate. So is all the food – breakfast, lunch and dinner, all of which are superb. Grootbos prides themselves on using local, from the farm, produce – their own chickens, pork, vegetables, honey and only wines from the Overberg region.
Choose the honeymoon package and you’ll be treated to a romantic turndown with flowers on your bed, a beach picnic, Villiera bubbly in your room, a spa treatment in the forest spa and (best of all) a private dinner in the wine cellar.
Every visitor to Grootbos feels like a honeymooner, though, with the extraordinary attention to detail, secluded cottages, and breathtaking views at every turn. The bath looks out over a vista of fynbos and ocean – quite amazing, especially when filled to overflowing with Charlotte Rhys bubbles!
Choose your time of year depending on whether you want to laze around the extraordinary drop-off pool in the hot months (January to April, in particular) or spot whales at your doorstep (August to November, in particular). There are also lots of last minute specials, if you don’t need to plan too much ahead.
I have to admit, though, as much as Grootbos is absolutely in the middle of nature and perfectly beautiful, the memory I will take with me forever is the private dinner in the wine cellar. A cellar filled with candlelight, just me and my most favourite man, and some of the finest fine dining you can imagine. As well as many a glass of wine and bubbly… This is what memories are made of!
If you’re looking for an unforgettable honeymoon in nature, with superb food, a fabulous spa, and all kinds of activities to keep you busy, look no further than Grootbos. I fell in love with it…
Until next time!
