Hi lovelies. It’s Mandy here. I’ve missed you in all the chaos of the last few months (don’t ask, nothing too serious but phew, things have been hardcore hectic). I’ll be back more regularly now (yay, I love this place and sharing lovely things with you all) and for my first time back in ages I thought we’d talk bags. We all need them, right? I don’t know about you, but for ages now I’ve been using those cute (but not exactly chic) shoppers from Cotton On Kids and TYPO for schlepping around my purse, baby and kids stuff, phone and the other flotsam and jetsam that makes its way into my life. Not very elegant and definitely not very efficient when you’re talking about my stuff and stuff for my three children. What I’ve realised is that I need to seriously up my handbag game, and the designs I’ve got my eye and heart on are one-of-a-kind pieces from the Balthazaar label started in 2015 by lovely Cape Town designer Jessi-Jean Havemann. Her bespoke handbags (and cushions) incorporate up cycled ethnic vintage carpets, tassels, leather and pom-poms, beads and shells to create the most magnificent bohemian works of functional art. It’s been a while since I’ve been so obsessed with something material (pun intended) but I simply must have one before the year is out. Each bag is handmade and hand-dyed and is totally unique. I also really respect and like the fact that both the sourcing of the fabrics and the manufacturing processes are driven by Jessi-Jean’s ethical convictions to support the local communities that she encounters during her travels as well as back home when it comes to the actual making of the bags. Jesse-Jean’s latest collection (as noted below) has been inspired by Frida Kahlo. J’adore!
The bags start at around R1500 to around R3500 and are investment pieces you will enjoy using forever. Plus just think of all those admiring glances. I reckon it’s not long until a big celeb schnaffles one up and then you’ll have to get in line, so best you check them out now.
For more info, online shopping and stockists, see Balthazaar Designs and like her Facebook page for news and new collections.
