Guys, meet Sugru. It’s a totally genius product you NEED in your life. A putty (well, the science of it is more complicated than that so find out about it here) that turns into flexible, durable silicone rubber allowing you to easily make repairs to everything from ceramics, glass, metal and wood to most plastics and even fabrics. It’s basically a mouldable glue and has the world in awe. Sugru is also waterproof and heat and cold resistant (so you can use it to replace pot handles or fix your fridge or freezer), feels fabulously soft and bouncy to the touch, and is super strong but can also be removed if you want to. Oh, and it comes in fun colours to make the chore of repairs and DIY so much more fun.
As well as the obvious application – fixing things – the website is full of ideas for using Sugru creatively. The product – named as one of the 50 Best Inventions by TIME magazine as well as ’21st century duct tape’ by Forbes – has won numerous awards. Its creator, Irish born Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh was also named one of CNN’s ‘7 Tech Superheroes To Watch’ in 2015.
A brief history of Sugru: Jane has the idea while studying at the Royal College of Art in London, inspired by promoting a culture of creativity and resourcefulness and creating an antidote to the throwaway mindset; this leads to the first version of Sugru in 2003; six years and 8000 hours in the lab later and Sugru becomes a reality, launching in 2009; since then 10 million mini packs of Sugru have been used in over 160 countries worldwide. I’m not sure about you, but Sugru is the gift I never knew I needed so badly. And I don’t even want to fix things, I just want to play!
You can buy Sugru online but you’ll also find the black and white version (more colours are due to launch in SA soon) at Builders Warehouse stores, and from February at a wider selection of hardware stores and other outlets.
