If there is one fabric i am continually drawn to (besides linens), it’s velvet. I love its sheen, i love how many beautiful, lustrous colours it comes in and i love how it brings such a sense of luxe to everything it touches (well, covers). From seemingly simple armchairs to hideous headboards, awful ottomans and ordinary occasional chairs, velvet has an ability to transform furniture into fabulous talking pieces. My only bug bear with velvet is that it can be expensive (considering the labour that goes into its manufacture, its no surprise), so i tend to head for the discount fabric stores in Woodstock if i’m on the hunt for velvet and sometimes i’ll be lucky, – a couple of years ago i found beautiful turquoise velvet that cost R60 a metre and if you’re looking, i also saw on the Bbellamy & Bbellamy Facebook page that they are having a big velvet special on their cushions and fabrics at the moment. For a wide selection of velvets – also look at what Hertex and U&G fabrics have on offer.
In the meantime, here’s some velvety inspiration for you…
