Amy_11I met Amy online after leaving a comment on her blog M-Dashing (named after her favourite punctuation mark, the m-dash). I love how passionate she is about her city and especially enjoy the snapshots she shares of her Brooklyn neighbourhood. Amy, a writer, works at one of my favourite magazines Real Simple, where she is the Copy Director. Having worked on the South African version i know they have very high standards so she must be one clever lady (Amy, my use of lower case i’s in my blog posts must make you cross eyed!)…have a look at what a typical day in Amy’s life entails…

    AF_view_1

7:26am: This is my view of Brooklyn waking up on a summer morning (it’s from the balcony of my studio apartment, which is only large enough to hold two adults and one neglected plant stand).

    AF_HmOffice_2

7:27am: First things first: when I get up, I check email, blog traffic, and my Twitter page. Here’s my home office (it’s small, but it’s got a lot of heart).

    AF_Breakfast_3

8:00am: I won’t lie—on weekday mornings, breakfast is a bit boring for me. I go for the same thing every time: buttered cinnamon and raisin toast from my neighborhood grocer, Trader Joe’s. (Oh! How I love Trader Joe’s!)

    AF_Subway_4

8:30 – 9:00am: Okay, here’s the thing—it’s not so cool to take a photo during your subway commute (I mean, if you’re not a tourist). So I snapped this one quickly on my phone, because heaven knows I would never want to be uncool.

    AF_RSOffice_5

11:00am: At this point, I have settled into the day’s work in my office at Real Simple. This is my little inspiration wall—I love being surrounded by pieces of art and photos and words that motivate me.

    AF_water_6

2:15pm: (And this is my water bottle. I just think it’s cool.)

    AF_Sidewalk_7

4:00pm: If I’m not in my office, I’m in a meeting somewhere. Here’s a view down to the street from one of our conference rooms. We’re in the Time-Life Building, which is currently being featured on the TV show Mad Men. (I am secretly delighted by this fact.)

    AF_HWorks_8

6:15pm: Once a week after work, I volunteer at the Housing Works Bookstore in Soho. (It’s a charity that helps fight AIDS.) It’s the perfect kind volunteer work for me, full of things I love: books, cool music, café foods, organizing, and cute boys.

    AF_Tabac_9

6:15pm: If I’m not volunteering, I’m usually hanging with a friend for dinner and drinks. Here’s a typical meeting spot: my favorite neighborhood restaurant, Bar Tabac.

    AF_1girl_12

8:15pm: On days after work when I want some time to read, I take the long way home: the local F train. I like it because the walk home from the station is lovely—I can ramble past Brooklyn brownstones with window boxes and kids’ drawings in chalk on the sidewalk. I usually take the same route so I can spy whatever One Girl Cookies bakery has in its front window. This is what’s currently on display.

    AF_bedside_10

11:00pm: I start winding down for the night with the intention of going to sleep early. Inevitably, though, I get drawn into The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on TV. I guess I just like to end the day with a good laugh.

Thanks so much for taking the time to show us a Day in your Life Amy!

Don’t forget to check out Amy’s blog where she ‘obsesses over home design and decor, artisan foods, shopping, art (heavy emphasis on up-and-comers), Brooklyn, and etsy.com-like stores’. She’s also a contributor to the fabulous Herman Miller lifework blog.

Great series… and a great entry… feel like I’ve been there done that! Love the home office and birds eye view from the Time-Life building. Could so do after work drinks at Bar Tabac.
